Area Summary
Back to Map...
Lazy lagoons, palm-filled islands and dense riverine forests… the Okavango’s watery wonderland have long been one of Botswana’s richest tourist attractions. Luxurious lodges and excellent game-viewing and bird-watching opportunities make it the ultimate safari destination. The Delta offers one of the most magical and unusual safari experiences, in a traditional dug-out canoe, or mokoro. The wildlife is spread through the Moremi Game Reserve on the east of the Okavango Delta, across Chief’s Island and then the floodplains & islands of the Okavango, through Shakawe and the wildlife spread to the famous San Paintings in the Tsodilo Hills.

The area north of Chiefs Island and in the Mombo concession area is known as ""The Predator Capital of Botswana"" due to the high populations and successful sightings of the variety of predators!! The excitement of island hopping from either Maun or Kasane gains you entry by light aircraft to your exclusive lodge, or you might prefer a 4x4 safari through Moremi and Chobe to Vic Falls in Zimbabwe.

REMEMBER - We charge public rates for all the lodges listed below - we do NOT mark up the prices! Spend more than 3 nights at any lodge, we might even give you a discount!!
Prices are a guideline only, due to seasonal changes, packages offered and exclude transfers.

RATES: Most of the rates in Botswana are in US$ and the balance are in Botswana Pula (BWP) or South African Rand (ZAR). Some people feel the rates are quite high – please consider the following: The lodges/camps are in remote areas and unfenced so all the provisions, supplies, laundry have to be flown to the camp from Maun or Kasane. Most of the lodges are in concession areas, so a large portion of the fees have to go to the local community for various projects and income. Some of the lodges are situated in the National Parks, so the high Park fees are included in the daily rate. You should always spend a minimum of TWO nights at any lodge in the Okavango, due to the logisitics of getting to and from the lodge. The flight transfers generally take place between 10am and 3pm. The times are only determined the day before, so you might arrive at a lodge at 3pm and depart at 10am, you have NO control over the times, unless you charter a private plane.

NOTE: South Africans and self-drive tourists: You CANNOT drive to a lodge that is deep in the Okavango Delta. All these lodges are in concession areas and you have to fly to them. This means leaving your vehicle at Maun airport and then getting onto the shuttle plane that we book you onto. This includes the budget lodges like Semetsi, Bush Camp etc - you have a maximum of 10 kgs of luggage per person allowed and you fly to the lodge/camp. Some of the lodges on the Western side of the Delta, you can drive the short distance to them in a 4x4 - like Nguma Island Lodge. You can drive to the lodges in Moremi Reserve, on the main land only.

NOTE: We do NOT book campsites nor do we book any self-catering lodges. No profit in such a service:( (Asseblief, ek kan nie Afrikaans praat nie, ek is n Engelsman - en as julle niks bo verstaan nie, dan moenie n e-mail na my stuur nie, asseblief.)

Chief's Camp is situated in the exclusive Mombo Concession in the Moremi Game Reserve. This pristine world of interwoven water and land is home to the Big Five. The area is known by the professionals as the "predator capital of Botswana" and is considered to have the finest game viewing in Southern Africa. Chief's Camp has been so skilfully integrated into the landscape that guests can often view game without even leaving the camp. Due to the extreme environmental sensitivity of the area, the whole structure has been designed so as to be totally removable from this site, without leaving a trace of its ever having been there. At Chief's Camp, 12 permanent luxury tents have been designed for ultimate privacy and comfort, while still offering guests front-row seats for this rewarding and thrilling game viewing experience.
Game viewing opportunities include daily game drives in open four-wheel drive vehicles and quiet mokoro (seasonal) trips along narrow Delta channels. Due to the concentration of predators in this concession, guided walking safaris are not offered. Expert guides are however, always on hand to offer a wealth of wildlife knowledge.

Chitabe Camp
2010 - US$622 - US$928 pppn
2011 - US$650 - US$995 pppn

Chitabe is known for its great game viewing opportunities, and the adventures begins at the landing strip, with everything from giraffe to impala and warthogs, literally meters from the runway. Rooms are raised on teak walking platforms - and great use of mahogany and marula woods are made in the main lounge, dining and bar areas. The rare Wild Dog also offers a show-stopping viewing opportunity in this area. And if this isn't enough, a dinner under the African mopanies and star-spilt night sky, with silver-service, chorus-accompanied entertainment, could round things off nicely. Guides will take guests to wherever a lion-kill or big game sighting may be, fearing nothing to ensure that guests get the best viewing and photographing opportunities.
Low Season and High Season pricing. Packages available with same owner properties.

Right on the very reeded riverine, one finds an abundance of wildlife, especially since all showers look head-on to this African wildlife buffet. Reedbuck, elephant and much more to feast on at immediate eye-level!

You may even find that a lioness defiantly meanders through camp, when least expected - which could mean that guests need to remain tent-bound until the dangerous feline continues on her path. This experience will definitely not disappoint, and offers a true "Wilderness" experience, for the guest wanting a truly close encounter with wildest Africa.

Vumbura (pronounced Vuumbera) is a six roomed luxury tented camp (although it can accommodate up to 16 guests in 8 tents for groups) situated to the north of Mombo, in a private concession bordering the Moremi Game Reserve in the extreme north of the Okavango Delta. Vumbura offers both water and land activities. Mekoros (dug-out canoes) traverse the flood plains under the guidance of polers from the BaYei tribe, who have been using mekoros as their traditional form of transport for hundreds of years. Boats take guests onto the larger and deeper areas of water (water levels permitting). Open 4x4 Land Rovers allow close proximity to animals in the savannah areas. This is possibly the only area in the Okavango where one can see Red Lechwe from a mokoro in the morning, then a Sable antelope from a game vehicle in the afternoon. Add in Lion, Leopard, Elephant and Buffalo along with all the plains game, and one has an excellent all round game experience in a remote corner of the Okavango. Walks on the islands give guests the opportunity to enjoy Africa from a different perspective. Each one of the 6 tented rooms has en-suite facilities with hot and cold running water, a shower, and flush toilet as well as an outdoor shower under the stars. The main dining, lounge and pub area is tucked beneath a canopy of indigenous trees with a view across the floodplain. The camp has a plunge pool. Access into this area is only by aircraft and then by vehicle to camp. If the waters are high in winter, we may have to access the camp from the airstrip by mekoros or boat.
